Bay Area Garage Conversion, ADU

Architect Irving Gonzales transformed an underutilized garage in San Leandro, California, into a net-zero ADU. The design includes a shed roof with photovoltaic panels, birch veneer plywood interiors, and Andersen 400 Series windows, entry and patio doors, for energy efficiency. The compact 508-square-foot space is filled with natural light and designed for aging-in-place, making it a sustainable and adaptable living solution.
ADU is surrounded by a mature garden with avocado trees and berries. The new shed roof is framed with structurally laminated beams, which allows an open 20-foot span at the interior.
